The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.–Socrates
Have you ever noticed that the way you feel or think on the inside is often manifested in the world around you?
If you have employees or children, or even pets, do you see how your ways of being also show up in energy and actions? If you are grumpy, they appear grumpy. If you are anxious, they appear anxious. If you don’t share, they won’t share.
Say you purchase a new car, all of a sudden you see that same car everywhere you go. Or maybe you and your spouse decide it’s time to have children and then everywhere you look you see pregnant women, young families, and babies.
As you grow and take your life to higher levels of success, your consciousness expands. Your perspective shifts and stretches to include concepts that were foreign to you before. Like George Lucas said, “Our focus determines our reality.”
Many people go through life accepting that reality is fixed outside of us and that we are victims of its whims with zero impact on the outcome. I think we have more ability to create our reality than we even realize. With that in mind, I challenge you to see that what we focus on expands.
If you focus on the way you feel about your lack of money, you create scarcity.
If you focus on generating income, and take action, you create income.
If you focus on what you are grateful for, you will see even more that you are grateful for.
If you focus on your failures, your fears, your weaknesses–these too will be amplified.
If you focus on your loneliness, you will remain lonely.
If you focus on love, you will receive love.
I am a firm believer in the idea that the way you do anything is the way you do everything.
For example, if I am half-assing it on the handball court, chances are I am half-assing it in my business affairs. If I am giving my all in one place, more than likely I am giving my all in other areas of my life as well.
Gretchen Rubin, who has been on this podcast, and author of the bestselling book The Happiness Project, relayed a story on her blog about reading The Praise of Folly by Erasmus. She read it many years ago in college but never forgot the simple yet powerful message of the story known as “the argument of the growing heap”.
Erasmus writes: “If ten coins are not enough to make a man rich, what if you add one coin? What if you add another? Finally, you will have to say that no one can be rich unless one coin can make him so.”
Gretchen adds “Whether we focus on the single coin or the growing heap will shape our behavior.” Ask yourself, can one coin make you rich?
Just as one great focused act can change the course of history, so can one focused thought change your life.
Pay attention to what you focus on and bring yourself constantly closer to that which you desire instead of focusing on what you do not want.
Create your world.
Create the life of your dreams one coin at a time.
Jim Rohn said, “Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become.”
